Style and fashion of previous decades can provide wonderful inspiration for adding a vintage twist to special occasion glamour. This week we are feeling nostalgic and focussing on style of the 1950s. Appleby was established early in the decade by Margaret Appleby, a hungarian emigree who married a Dubliner and began crafting one-off jewellery pieces for select customers.
Dublin looked very different in these years. While not as cosmopolitan as capitals such as London and Paris, it was the Irish centre of fashion, as it is today. Men and women dressed up to go about their daily routines, men in suits and stylish ladies in smart hats, tailored two pieces, gloves and a dash of red lipstick!

1950s WEDDING
Margaret and John Appleby married in the 50s. Margaret wears a pretty veil and high necked gown.

The traditional white gown and veil reflected the styles of the day but were not always worn.

Many chose more modest, practical tailored suits, which could be worn again at special occasions, with flowers, a smart bag and perhaps a chic hat or head-piece.

1950s IRISH STYLE
Sybil Connolly, one of the most influential designers of the day, put Dublin and Ireland on the fashion map by marketing her lavish evening dresses and sophisticated daywear in New York and elsewhere. By using Irish fabrics Sybil Connolly established a unique identity, and her gorgeous designs were highly sought after by ladies of fashion at home and abroad.

Dreamy dresses, long gloves, pearls, statement necklaces, cute hats - very 50s, very elegant, very current.
