Forever yours - designing your wedding ring

APPLEBY / 18 July 2016

Shadow Shadow

Some couples choose to go the extra mile and design their wedding rings themselves, to ensure that every aspect of their personal style shines through. The possibilities are infinite and entirely personal. It is a good idea to research styles that inspire you in advance, before discussing with your jeweller.

If you are thinking of designing your own wedding band and creating that unique statement, there are some key factors to consider. An Appleby custom made wedding band is hand crafted to our own exceptional standard; if thinking of designing your own it is important to begin the process as early as possible, preferably as soon as you have decided on your wedding date. If opting for an engraving, however simple, you should also allow plenty of time - we recommend at least two weeks before the big day.

PRECIOUS METAL

The most popular options for wedding rings are yellow gold, white gold and platinum. Remember to think about the wedding band’s relationship with your engagement ring – whilst you might not want an entirely matching set, the rings should still complement each other. Whatever your preference, there are differences in cost, durability and appearance. Appleby can advise on the most suitable for your design and budget.

DIAMONDS & GEMSTONES

Traditionally, engagement rings have a solitaire stone, and wedding bands are left plain. Diamonds can add sparkle and glamour to a wedding band, however, particularly when designing a ring for a man. If you really want to stand out from the crowd, you could opt for alternative stones such as sapphires or emeralds. For a more discreet option, you could have a stone hidden inside the band of the ring, for an elegant, personal touch of luxury. Again, if featuring diamonds in your wedding band, the design should complement, rathar than distract from, your engagement ring.

 SHAPE & SETTING

The shape of your band, and the setting of any stones that you decide to include, have a big influence on the style of your design. For instance, if you want a ring with a vintage feel, you could go for a yellow gold band with intricate detailing and caviar beading around the stone. However, if you want something more modern, you could opt for a bold platinum band studded with round cut diamonds. You could replicate a special ring from your family and add a modern twist - using similar precious stones and metals, or tweaking a traditional design.

ENGRAVING

One of the best ways to ensure that your ring is totally unique is to have it engraved. The date of your wedding, the name of your partner, an in joke that the two of you share - engraving is a great way to give you an enduring reminder of your special day.

If you intend to have an engraving done, check with your jeweller to make sure the thickness of the band in your chosen design is suitable. Extremely thin or fragile bands may not be strong enough to withstand the engraving process, or may not have enough space for your chosen wording. And remember to allow enough time to have your engraving ready for the day - we recommend at least two weeks.
